Burkina Faso has participated in the Own Africavision Song Contest 6 times since its debut in the first edition. The country won the first edition with Hawa Boussim and her song "Hme ye".
Burkina Faso debuted in the first ever edition of the Own Africavision Song Contest, in DR Congo. Hawa Boussim was chosen by RTB to be the first ever representative, thereby selecting her internally. She performed her song "Hme ye" and managed to win the semi final, and the grand final overall. This gave Burkina Faso their first ever win and she was the first ever winner at the Own Africavision Song Contest. Because of this, the nest edition by the rules, would be hosted in Burkina Faso.
Ouagadougou was chosen as the second edition’s host location, in Burkina Faso. Nabalüm represented Burkina Faso and ended up placing 24th in the final, collecting a mere 45 points, and bringing Burkina Faso its worst result since their debut. Regardless the 100% continued up until the third edition, where Fleur unfortunately ended their streak by placing 12th in the semi final. RTB decided that from this point onwards a change was needed so that Burkina can get back to the final to continue their reputation in the contest .
The fourth edition arrived, and RTB meant business. Hawa Boussim was internally selected yet again and was set to perform her latest song "Dolada". This was the second time that Burkina Faso sent an entry in the Bissa language. Hawa claimed she would try to become the winner for the second time in history, but sadly only narrowly missed out on this title, as she placed 2nd in the semi final and grand final, collecting 154 points.
Another automatic qualification spot was sealed thanks to Hawa, and RTB managed to hunt down European legend Aminata for the fifth edition, who also has connections to the spin off Eurovision Song Contest. However, she was bitterly received in the contest, with her song "Šis ir mans laiks", she placed 23rd out of 26 in the grand final. RTB apologised for sending her since the Latvian language did not represent Burkina Faso in any sort of way, therefore a rethinking of the selection process was decided.
The sixth edition saw RTB creating and organising their first ever national selection for the contest, B. Radio Télévision du Burkina first announced back in January of 2021 that a national selection would take place to select the artist and song for the Own Africavision Song Contest 6 for Burkina Faso, the format was still unknown at this point as little information was revealed during this announcement. On 29th March 2021, RTB announced that 4 songs would be participating in the inaugural selection, where international juries will be able to determine the winner of the selection. As well as it was decided that the edition would be presented in 4 languages: English, French, Bissa and Mòoré. Hawa Boussim hosted the first edition, and Emy was chosen as the first winner with their song Inconvenient - the first time ever Burkina Faso sent an entry in English. Regardless, Emy reached the final and placed 13th, an amazing result claimed RTB.
Despite the recent success of B, RTB had decided to returning to internally selecting their entry at the seventh edition, with two artists rumoured to be in contention.
